As part of April Child Abuse Prevention month, SafeSpot and other community leaders joined Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in a proclamation ceremony to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Crime Victims Rights Fair

SafeSpot team supported Fairfax County Police Departments National Crime Victims fair. The week long initiative promotes victims rights and honors crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. Fairfax County Police Department Victim Services Division hosts an event each year to honor crime victims and assist in bringing awareness to crime victims rights and services in Fairfax County.
2019 SCAN Luncheon

SafeSpot staff participated in SCAN’s 17th Annual Ally in Prevention Award luncheon. This luncheon honors five remarkable heroes working to protect children, support families and prevent child abuse and neglect across Northern Virginia.

2018 Fashion for Passion

SafeSpot’s 6th Annual Passion for Fashion show was SOLD OUT! With the help of donations from the Fashion Show, SafeSpot will be hiring another forensic interviewer/ family advocate to meet the needs of the community.
Happy Hour for Hope

Our Junior Board held a social for cause by hosting the Happy Hour for Hope event. The event was sold out instantly and it was a great turn out.
2018 Champions Fore Golf Tournament

The Champions Fore Children golf tournament was once again a successful event. Due to the funds raised at the golf tournament, SafeSpot is able to successfully continue to provide services to the families of Fairfax County.
Field of Hope

A day of games to benefit SafeSpot and educate the community on the difficult realities of child abuse. The kids were joined by players of the Washington Redskins, and D.C.’s United soccer team.
Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day Fundraiser

2018 Fairfax County Child Abuse Proclamation

SafeSpot and other local partnerships came together as a community to play a role in child abuse prevention. On April 6, SafeSpot attended SCAN of Northern Virginia’s 15th Annual Allies in Prevention Awards Luncheon at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Tysons Corner. At the luncheon SCAN announced the 2017 winners of its annual Allies in Prevention Awards, an annual honor given to community members for exceptional work protecting children and strengthening families in five regions of Northern Virginia.

Proclamation and Wear Blue Day

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month on Tuesday, April 5 in the Board Auditorium. The Proclamation started at 9:30am, and attendees wore blue to show support. Special thanks to our board members and volunteers for putting together the pinwheel pots that were on display at the meeting. Especially memorable was Chairman Bulova holding up a pot of pinwheels as she made note of the Proclamation for Child Abuse Awareness Month.
Volunteer Open House and Work Day

Many hands make light work. And that proved true when volunteers gathered on a Sunday afternoon at the center and prepared for the many events coming in April. Some refreshed and dressed the doll shaped signs which we will use at the golf tournament. Others prepared pinwheel bouquets for the pinwheel gardens which will spring up in April. Volunteers also created pinwheel pots to use in indoor locations. And others attached blue ribbons to informative cards which will be distributed throughout the month. In addition to the activities, volunteers were also able to tour the center and see the results of their hard work the past few years. MANY THANKS to all of our wonderful volunteers!
Hill Day in Richmond
February 2016
In early February, SafeSpot Executive Director Michele Thames and board president Denise Balzano joined professionals from the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Virginia to meet with legislators in Richmond. SafeSpot was there to advocate for an increase in statewide funding for Children’s Advocacy Centers across the state of Virginia. Safespot receives an annual grant of about $50,000 from this funding. We are grateful to state Senator Janet Howell as she introduced a budget amendment requesting additional funding. Michele and Denise met with delegates Marcus Simon, Kathleen Murphy and Paul Krizek as well as Senator Favola and several other staff members.
Creating a Community Action Plan for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse
January 11-12, 2016
In January, SafeSpot hosted a two-day course called “Creating a Community Action Plan for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.” Close to 40 attendees represented county agencies and non-profit organizations from Fairfax including the Department of Family Services, the Fairfax County Health Department, Fairfax County Public Schools, Neighborhood and Community Services, the Women’s Center, Stop Child Abuse Now, Marine Corps Community Services to name a few. Trainers from the National Criminal Justice Training Center of Fox Valley Technical College provided a foundation of knowledge and led the group through a series of exercises and discussions over the course of two days. The attendees identified strengths and weaknesses of the county in the area of child abuse prevention services and worked in small groups to create a dashboard of action items.

Proclamation: April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Members of SafeSpot’s staff and Board of Directors attended the Proclamation ceremony at the Board of Supervisors meeting where April was officially declared Child Abuse Prevention Month. We made a strong showing and support was provided by several agencies and non-profits. Keisha Edwards from the Department of Family Services spoke and provided information about the issue of child abuse and its magnitude in Fairfax County.

Champions4Children 5K Run/Walk Netted $30,000

It really is amazing how a grass roots campaign can grow with the help of a caring community. That caring community helped raise more than $30, 000 to re-open a center for victims of child abuse in Fairfax County called SafeSpot.
And the 5K winner is...

Alex Haugh of Vienna, VA won our April 26 Champions4Children 5K Race and Fun Run, and the first woman across the finish line was Kim Fagen, also of Vienna. However, we all know that the true winner was SafeSpot, and the children it serves. The second annual cross-country race through Lake Fairfax Park brought in $56,000 for the young organization. More than 320 runners and walkers registered for the event, and all were smiling as they crossed the finish line.

On October 6, The SafeSpot Fashion Show netted well over $50,000 for SafeSpot, a center for abused children.About 250 fashionistas enjoyed a wonderful runway show highlighting many gorgeous fall fashions. One of the highlights were the young volunteer models who performed as well as the professionals.Everyone enjoyed the show and the shopping afterward. Bloomingdale’s generously donated 10% of the event’s sales proceeds to SafeSpot.
SafeSpot is Awarded State Grant

On May 15, SafeSpot received notification from the Virginia Department of Social Services that their grant application had been approved.
This is a major step toward re-opening a Center where the Fairfax County team – including law enforcement, child protective services, Commonwealth’s Attorney, medical and mental health professionals – will provide care and services for victims of child abuse.

Police Eager for New Children's Advocacy Center

“This is already a horrific situation for children, so we want a Children’s Advocacy Center to allow them to have a better experience,” says Saly Fayez, Director of the Fairfax County Police Department’s Victim Services Unit.
